The Culture
With the way of the world, culture affects everything,
Especially when it comes to young kids.
Social media is a heavy influence on them and what they do with their lives,
From Instagram to Facebook, Snapchat and TikTok.
Trying to get these kids off of their phones is a task within itself,
Thatâs the challenge for me every single day, even with my kids.
Music has significantly changed and now itâs trap music,
The things they listen to boggles my mind as a teacher but Iâm in the know with music.
Iâm old school and listen to soul because itâs what my mother listened to,
Thereâs also the hip-hop I grew up on that has lyrics and great production.
The times change and so does music, sports and entertainment,
Thereâs evolution with things, especially technology and the internet.
While I am a teacher and I get kids to read books about black history,
Iâm also telling them how social media is and how to manage it.
Itâs not about the amount of followers, itâs about sharing experiences,
That they should be careful in what they post, when and the repercussions for bad decisions.
Television has kidsâ minds all over the place, especially with reality TV,
Theyâre constantly talking about whatâs going on with shows and I wonder if theyâre doing schoolwork.
You all know TV used to be great with family shows on daily,
Now, there arenât as many but thereâs a lot of remakes of movies, dramas and other things.
You hear so much coming from kids in school,
They just feel more comfortable speaking their truths here.
The culture is shown throughout the neighborhood,
From the murals by the river to the kids wearing what famous people do.
Itâs about making this a place where kids can be themselves,
But so much goes on that it prevents them from immersing themselves into things they love.
The culture is about allowing these kids to express themselves more,
Through art, writing, creating and the goal is to give them the space to do that.
Itâs been a fight to provide programs for kids to do these things,
I didnât have those opportunities as a kid so I want to give the future generation that.
Granted I wasnât doing the right things as a teenager,
But I do know that if I can get the right things in place, skyâs the limit for these kids.
The culture is what will drive the world in the next few years,
Being able to give these kids a space to show their talents is imperative.
We try to have talent shows and showcases where kids can rap or play an instrument,
Do a fashion show or show off their dancing skills, itâs fun to watch.
They all try to get me to take pictures and record things on their phones,
Itâs just good for a few nights a year to give them a place to enjoy themselves as life is hard in Alphabet City.
Theyâre doing things to post on their social media pages,
Some do it for likes, some do it to show who they are as they grow and mature.
Thereâs a sense of pride trying to get kids to do
